The Car That Beat FerrariThe Ford GT40, arguably the most famous racing sports car of all time, comes to HO scale slot car racing. And AFX brings it to you as the next edition in the SRT Collector Series.HISTORYCommissioned by Henry Ford, the GT40 was designed specifically to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, in part as a pay-back after Ferrari turned down Ford s offer to buy the famous Italian marque in 1963. Indeed, the GT40 did beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, then again in 1967, 68 and 69, dominating endurance sports car racing over the entire period.GT40 #1 Drivers: Ken Miles / Denis Hulme After winning the Daytona 24 Hour earlier in the year, Miles had led much of the 1966 Le Mans race and was well ahead near the end when Ford decided they wanted their three cars to cross the line at the same time for a publicity photo. Miles was instructed to wait for the other two cars and duly crossed the finish line together. Only then did he learn that a technicality gave the win to McLaren. Miles, whose lifelong dream had been to win Le Mans, would never get another chance to achieve that goal. He was tragically killed later that same year while testing.SPECIALLY NUMBERED PACKAGING The Collector Series GT40s come in specially numbered packaging. Each package has a coded number on the upper left hand corner of the back of the blister pack. The 9 digit code shows the month and year of production and the incremental number of the package within the production run.
